Lomac GranTurismo 14.0: a goal or a starting point?

Powered by three Yamaha V8 XTOs , Lomac GranTurismo 14.0 marks a turning point for the Italian boatyard and a definitive leap to larger boats.

1,275 hp and 14 meters, on an inflatable boat: these two figures already state that the Lomac GranTurismo 14.0, powered by three Yamaha V8 XTO Offshore outboards, is not a means like many others. For Lomac, the GranTurismo 14.0 marks the arrival point of the path they took a few years ago, focusing on design and quality to step up to the premium segment. This is what they pursued with the Adrenalina and GranTurismo ranges. And this model is the new goal.

The test

The sea outside Genoa is calm, ideal for highlighting the speed qualities of the Lomac GranTurismo 14.0: the three Yamaha V8 XTO Offshore motors, 425 hp each, definitely promise high performance. Unfortunately, the captain from the company tells us that the hull has been treated with antifouling and therefore we won’t be able to touch the top of 58.6 knots of the previous days. Darn…!

Are we that much slower? Well, we reached 55 knots, although at that speed the fuel consumption is really high. Of course if you chose a Lomac GranTurismo 14.0 and three such engines (the Yamaha V8 XTO is the most powerful outboard on the market except for the small-production Seven Marine), it means that you are ready for anything.

What you don’t have to get prepared for is taming a beast. Despite all the power, Lomac GranTurismo 14.0 is docile and ready to respond promptly to any input. To us, the ideal speed for a fast cruise is 40 knots, still at 50 knots you still feel in total control like you’re cruising on a railroad.

On the other hand, if you need to save fuel the minimum planing pace is 18 knots at 2700 rpm burningv82 liters per hour. But in this case we suggest to go for the version with diesel inboards. As for the acceleration, we get to planing in 5.5 seconds and to 40 knots in another 10.5.

On board

Beside the usual layout, it’s worth to emphasize the attention to design and to details put by Lomac on the GranTurismo 14. For instance, the handrail on the superstructure, which is…not a rail made in stainless steel, but a recess in the fiberglass molding: less invasive to the eye and just as effective.

The bow sundeck is slightly recessed so that it can be used even at high speeds. We really like the anchor locker with the large cleats hidden inside, in order not to clutter up on the deck. Still, two pop-up ones are usable during short stops (for example when refueling).

The large aft solarium hides a huge lazarette, which can house two inboard motors as we mentioned. The U-shaped couch is a little too close to the kitchenette so the dinette could turn out to be a bit tight, while the dashboard is perfectly sized and sports a cool design and an effective protection. The cabin is rational and features a double berth and a heads with separate shower box.

Before the numbers, we want to spent a few words on the completely new hull. For its design the boatyard had the Politecnico University of Milan taking care of the structural calculations, and especially of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a method that uses numerical analysis and algorithms to solve and analyze problems of fluid dynamics. Among the theoretical calculations and the real infusion of vinylester resin the error was only 30 kg on a total of 5800 without engines (the total becomes 7.7 tons in the water). It took two years of studying, but considering the final result it was worth it.
