Suzuki DF25A and DF30A win the NMMA Innovation Award

The 2014 Innovation Award from NMMA goes to the new three-cylinder, 490 cc. Suzuki engine, in the two powersteps 25 and 30 HP.

The total count of NMMA Awards won by Suzuki gets to eight prizes. 50 years and over three million units after the production of the first Suzuki outboard, the Japanese builder has received another Innovation Award by NMMA, the National Marine Manufacture Association from USA. It’s the eight title, underlining the big commitment in designing and building marine engines.

In 2012 Suzuki’s seventh title went to the DF300AP, top engine in the range and the first outboard combining standard and counter-rotation operation into the same lower unit. After just two years, Suzuki is awarded the same important prize but for a much smaller engine, as a recognition to the R&D activities from the Hamamatsu-based Company.
DF30A and DF25A can boast many interesting features, starting with the 62 Kg weight that makes them the lightest units in their power ranges respectively.

In the motivation for the award, NMMA stresses how the two models are the first units in their classes to use needle bearings on the camshaft arms, to reduce mechanical friction and enhance performance. Another evaluation point is the revolutionary ignition system, that can work and pump fuel without power from the batteries: this means faster start, smoother run, improved acceleration in every use conditions.

As the major part of the Suzuki range, the new 25 and 30 units provide the Lean Burn Control System, an electronic control that at a constant engine speed monitors and optimizes the air/fuel ratio, making it leaner (i.e. less fuel injected) without hindering performance but allowing a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Beside this, another key factor for the Innovation Award has been the direct air intake and cowling ventilation, which improves engine cooling and better “breathing” for the combustion process. For the same purposes, the flywheel has been designed with a peculiar shape that optimizes the air flow inside the cowling, while the new air filter further improves the performance.
