Scarab 215 Impulse: adrenaline is pumping

We tested Scarab 215 Impulse in the Wake Edition trim, and she won us: performance, look, details…although the price is pretty steep.

Scarab 215 Impulse Wake Edition, as pictured in the images, was sold last December at the Grand Pavois in La Rochelle for a price of € 80,635 including taxes, a challenging investment for a boat just over 6 meters. Still, as we see it it’s love at first sight, and much more so after a test.

Scarab 215 Impulse, queen of beauty

Telling of all the solutions that are found in every detail could take hours, even if the boat is only 6.5 meters. Stern and bow of the Scarab 215 Impulse are in a sense symmetrical: both characterized by two U-shaped sofas along the perimeter, both easily convertible into sundeck or dinette, with extensions or with the table hinged on the side. Aft, the central cushion can be removed to free up the passage to the bathing platform that hides two large lockers. Other storage spaces are located below the settees and, if you fear that there is no place for boards, do not worry , there’s the roll bar with appropriate supports.

Other small open lockers alternate on the sides with the loudspeakers of an amazing hi-fi system, handrails everywhere (navigation can be fast…) and many (undeniable for Americans) cup holders. Both driver and co-driver seats leave breathless for design, quality of workmanship (common to all the cushions),but even for the comfort; while a cool touchscreen collects all the info and not just from the engines: unsurprisingly, it is one of the most expensive options. The central passageway with the two-part opening leads to the cozy forward area, with a final surprise as where the anchor locker normally is there’s a second swim ladder.

Scarab 215 Impulse: the test

The sea is rough, enough to discourage our test with a 6-meter boat pushed by 400 HP. But the Scarab 215 Impulse makes fun of the waves as you would never expect it, allowing me to easily touch 40 knots. Too bad that there’s no data for the fuel consumption, as the two 1.5-liter supercharged Rotax engines seem to be really thirsty. What is sure is that they push really hard, so that in less than 4 seconds we reach the planing, while 30 knots are achieved in 8″. I also find the time to check the minimum plane speed, even if it’s not the number you need on such a boat. Anyway it’s 14 knots at 4800 rpm.
Then I try to undermine the Scarab 215 Impulse seaworthiness, but there’s no way: she turns on a dime, it could even seem a spin-out were not for the total control of the boat. The 21° deadrise makes its work, as wave crossing is always soft and navigation is steady even if the sea is really bad. The directionality granted by the two water-jets is good, and it’s complemented by a remarkable sensitivity at the helm that never turns into danger: even the sharpest maneuvers, are faced with good safety margins. A good point for a boat where fun and need for speed can lead to some exaggeration: you know you’ll be forgiven.
