Nouveau yacht concept by Andy Waugh: from Gaudì to the future

Nouveau yacht concept, by the British designer Andy Waugh, pushes the boundaries of the yacht aesthetic to an extreme degree.

In the words of her creator, Nouveau’s design is”inspired by the works of the classical exponents of the Art Nouveau style, including Alphonse Mucha and Antoni Gaudi, and encapsulates the key principles of dynamism and organic form in an innovative and audacious manner”.

Beside the important “forefathers” and the complex definition, sure the exterior lines are dramatic, from each and every angle. Tough to say what is more catchy between the huge, rounded side windows, the intertwining elements connecting the decks or the immense, covered foredeck which raises up to the level of the upper bridge.

Even without proper images, the interior is supposed to be surprisingly spacious, with a declared head clearance for the main deck of 2.7 meters.

The bridge deck of Nouveau yacht concept by Andy Waugh is elevated above the owner’s deck, the latter featuring a full width suite with balconies on both sides harmoniously aligned with the circular profile graphics and the main deck entrance below. The mentioned intertwined bulwarks are, still in Andy Waugh’s words, “sweeping, tentacle like”, and provide an enhanced sense of light, space and connection to the environment for the interior. Sunbathing and lounging areas make up the owner’s aft deck, which is linked to the decks above and below by spiral staircases and a water feature which runs from the sun-deck Jacuzzi, then across the bridge and owner’s decks, and down via a water-slide into the main deck pool. The purpose of this feature is to enhance the feeling of being at one with nature and the seascape.

A profile view of the design emphasizes the concentric, circular graphic which converges on the main deck entrance.

Forward on main deck there are twin VIP cabins with fold down balconies, while dining and lounging space is to the aft and leads out onto a discreet deck with infinity pool. An owner’s office is situated aft of the wheelhouse and crew areas on the bridge deck, with deck space for formal, al-fresco dining. The sun bridge above is intended to be an intimate retreat from the other social areas on board, and a perfect place for 360 degree viewing the scenery.

Nouveau yacht concept by Andy Waugh is aimed at the more modern client with a relatively small entourage (at least this is the idea, although there’s space for 25 crew…) who give priority to style and taste rather than sheer size. Practicality and efficient use of space were not primary concerns for the designer, whose priority was a radical look.

Born in UK, designer Andy Waugh is graduated in Transport Design and started working in 2004 at KKG Catamarans in Vienna. On his return to the UK in 2008 Andy joined the team at H2 Yacht Design where his first major project was the award winning MEYA MEYA.
During his time at H2 Andy worked on several live projects ranging from 38 to 120 m. Nouveau is one of some extreme yacht concepts (at least design-wise) that he released and that BoatMag International will present on these pages in the upcoming months.
