A 12-meter rib, Capelli Tempest 40, matched to a couple of Yamaha V8s delivering 350 HP each. Do you think this could be boring?
We’ve shown you the preview of Capelli Tempest 40. And we spoke about the introduction of the new Yamaha F350 outboards. So, what’s new? Well, put them together and the test is gonna be real fun.
Capelli Tempest 40: open with an eye for cruising
Let’s go straight below: I did not imagine that the cabin could be so roomy, ideal for a couple who wants to spend some days cruising: the double berth quickly turns into a dinette for any whims of the weather, and there would be space enough for an indoor galley. The heads itself could be found on much larger boats. A large companionway leads back to the deck where Capelli Tempest 40 offers the best. The bow sun bed is recessed between the two tubulars that create a rather narrow V, reducing the useful surface of the cushions. A padded backrest on the console structure helps. Beside the anchor and the winch, the bow hosts two loudspeakers as well, so entertainment is guaranteed.
A safe handrail surrounds the windshield giving a solid grip, while the helm station has enough room to house large monitors the joystick to maneuver. The two seats can be used even when standing by tilting the lower part. Aft of the main structure a full galley completes the features. The dinette on Capelli Tempest 40 is located to stern, with a cozy U-couch and a removable table. If sunbathing is what you want to do, move abaft some more to find two large cushions, and when some shelter is needed an awning comes out of the rollbar (which, by the way, hinder the look from outside).
The huge lazarette below the aft solarium is dedicated to housing inboard engines, so in our case is empty and can host fenders, rigs and stuff. And I would go for the outboards, as there’s still a wide swim platform to enjoy.

Tempest 40: the test
A moderate sea is not enough to embarrass our Capelli Tempest 40. The progression of the two Yamaha F350 (with a pair of three-bladed 17″ steel propellers) is great, and the top speed of 45 knots (if you promise not to check fuel consumption) is really high, maybe enough to opt for smaller engines. The acceleration is terrific: 2.7 seconds to get to plane with no nose-up, and just over 17 to reach the maximum speed. But you can also find an affordable cruising: at the minimum plane, the engines revving at 2100, you move at 11 knots burning only 36 liters per hour. At the helm Capelli Tempest 40 confirms the good feelings, requiring no special expertise even at higher speeds: the stability is exceptional and the response to the sharpest maneuvers confirms the felling of really safe navigation. Only complaint, when it’s my turn to be a passenger: sitting on the stern sofa, your back lacks a proper support and, also in consideration of our fast pace, it feels the need of a more comfortable backrest: a few inches more would be enough.
