Sacs Rebel 47, or the death of maxi-ribs

Grow larger with ribs then look further: that’s how Sacs Rebel 47 is born. It gets the best of maxi-ribs and launches a new concept of boat, something never seen before.

Farewell to maxi-ribs? No, that’s not the point, and the first to state it is Andrea Loro sales manager with Sacs Marine: with the Strider range the boatyard has pioneered the segment. But there’s no doubt that boats such as this Sacs Rebel 47 combine the advantages of larger inflatables with the features of big open yachts. Sticking to their calling for innovation, it had to be the Italian yard the first to walk this path. It comes then clear how Rebel really denotes an attitude towards the well-known standards.

Sacs Rebel 47: the deck

Sacs Rebel 47 comes from the request of customers demanding more customization, more space, more protection against the whims of the weather still not eager to move into the sphere of rigid boats. Requests that have come in unison, both by those looking for a maxi-tender, and by those who use it to cruise overnight or just in daytime. Thus was born Rebel Sacs 47 new but mindful of the lessons and experience of Strider family. Add to this the design by Christian Grande, and you can be sure that everything has been studied up to smallest detail.
The hull comes from the experience of maxi-ribs from Sacs, but the novelty is in the superstructure built with “D” shaped, closed-cell tubulars, pre-formed and covered with a plastic coating and then by a layer of Hypalon neoprene in order to get a family feeling with ribs and create a rubbing strake on the entire perimeter of the boat. The “D” section, with the curved element on the outside, increases the interior space and creates two protected and well sized passageways. As for the hardtop, it’s part of the customization requested by customers.

Engine-wise, the choice is big, with the model under test propelled by two Volvo Penta D6 400 HP with Duoprop stern and G5 propellers. Alternatives come in the form of two petrol 8.2 l Mercury, 430 §HP each with Bravo Three stern, or if you want to exaggerate, Cummins QSB 6.7 l 550 HP with Arneson Surface Drives, to fly up to 50 knots.

The deck layout is that of a walkaround. Worth a mention are the large garage for a tender or some water toys or scuba gear, and the two luxurious chaise-longues to bow, which along with the large solarium make the front part of Sacs rebel 47 the place to be.

Sacs Rebel 47: interiors

On a boat that wants to be totally customizable, interiors can’t be dubbed as “standard”. Processing of materials, their combination and the layout stand out for the versatility of the proposal. For a couple, the fore cabin could be set up as a dinette, as more berths (up to three) are housed amidships, with pretty good air, while the head is worthy of a superyacht.

Sacs Rebel 47: the test

The sea out of Portofino is oil-flat on a hot and sunny day: good to enjoy the chaise longue to bow, very bad to appreciate the seaworthiness of the Sacs Rebel 47. I have to focus performance then: even with the smallest power among the offer, they don’t disappoint, with a peak of 36.4 knots (trim’s a little more than 50%). But even with the trim to zero the progression is good, so as to suggest that for a mixed use which include day cruising and weekends, this is the best solution, with moderate fuel consumption that becomes properly low to the limit of plane (1800 rpm and 11 knots, 36 liters per hour). At cruising speed, which we deem to be at 2750 rpm, the speed is 26 knots and the fuel need 90 lph.
Assumed that Sacs Rebel 47 is a master in economy, acceleration proves the sporty spirit, with less than 5 seconds to get to plane and 28” for maximum speed. The only waves I can face are the ones of my wake, and of course there’s no hesitation even if I ask for a sudden turn. No surprises, right?
